If you have not been paying as close attention as you should have to the many television shows that your children are watching, maybe it is past time that you should. Once a child is old enough and smart enough to understand what a sexual innuendo is, they can their fill of them on almost any night between seven and ten o clock on television. The most famous sitcoms that many kids are crazy about are so inundated with sly remarks about sex that are supposed to go over kids heads, are actually hitting home them easily.
Combined with all of the racy commercials with near naked bodies that are shown both day and night, all the information they can learn at school from friends, and the broad spectrum of things they can view and read on the internet, it really should not come as no surprise to anyone that most seven or eight year olds know what sex is. This is the age where kids used to be preoccupied with playing dolls and baseball.
It is so easy for parents to blame the raging hormones of teenagers on television and other forms of entertainment like video games, but what happened to the responsibility of the parent to safeguard what their children are exposed to? Just because television and the internet is so easily accessible to a ten year old does not mean that they should have access to it anytime and to be able to watch anything they want to.
Censorship of television and other media is something that not a lot of us are fond of because it does infringe on the rights of others to see what they want to, but that does not mean that it is an excuse for parents to be inattentive to what their children are up to. As parents we have to make sure that our kids are not exposed to the things that can set their hormones on fire at a much too early age. We are responsible to watch what they watch and listen to what they listen to and if we do not like it, turn it off!
